Katayoon Navabi, Program Director

110 Gymnasium Place, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon SK, S7N 0W9

A plant breeder, upon completing her PhD in plant breeding and genetics at the University of Alberta, Katy moved to Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) Saskatoon, under a three-year NSERC post-doctoral fellowship. While at AAFC, she had the opportunity to delve more into the bioinformatics aspects of molecular genetics.

Katy joined Cargill in 2013 as a senior canola breeder to lead the parent line breeding program, developing elite inbred lines for commercial hybrid products with a focus on modified oil characteristics. During the six years that she worked as a breeder of a commercial breeding program, she developed a passion for the applications of genomic technologies and linkages to phonemics to help improve genetic gains. Prior to joining DivSeek, she worked as a consultant for the Plant Phenotyping and Imaging Research Center (P2IRC) to help bring the utilization of the research products into breeding programs.

In September, 2019, Katy assumed the role of Program Director at DivSeek International, as well as her current position as Associate Director of Business Development at GIFS.

Originally from Iran where she completed all of her undergraduate studies, Katy can very well relate to the importance of empowering breeders and farmers around the globe with the vast diversity of natural genetic resources and innovative technologies.
