Mike Cey

Genome Prairie

Mike is an alumnus of the University of Saskatchewan, where he obtained a degree in Soil Science, followed later by an Executive MBA from the University of Fredericton, specializing in Innovation Leadership. His roots are in the Prairies, growing up on a large mixed farm in west central Saskatchewan.

Prior to leading Genome Prairie as CEO Mike spent ten years as the Director of Corporate Initiatives with Ag-West Bio. There, he co-led the creation of Natural Products Canada and the Diverse Field Crop Research Cluster. Prior to that Mike acted as first the Corporate Agronomist and later the Director of Marketing with Federated Co-operatives Ltd, the largest company in Saskatchewan. Other experience included agronomy, business process reengineering and project management. Mike holds Competent Communicator status with Toastmasters along with Project Management Professional (PMP) and Securities Futures certifications.

Mike and his wife are parents of four children currently in university and they happily reside on a 5-acre property just outside the city of Saskatoon.

As a lifelong learner Mike has a passion for learning and advancing research that will lead to impactful outcomes in agriculture, human and animal health and the environment. Genomics based research holds particular promise in its ability to bring advancements forward faster, better and more economically than we have ever thought possible. As we fully enter the era of advanced synthetic biology the opportunity to feed, heal, empower and protect our world sustainably.
